Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Mountain available for my group to rent?

Yes. The Mountain Retreat & Learning Center is available for rent for group meetings, conferences and retreats. Our facilities can accommodate up to 120 people in our lodge and cabins. Meeting space capacities range from 15-120. Three meals a day are served in our Dining Hall. Click here for more information.
My group is not Unitarian Universalist. Can we come to The Mountain?

Yes. The Mountain hosts a wide diversity of groups — nonprofit organizations, religious organizations of numerous faiths, business groups, even family reunions.
Is The Mountain closed in the winter?

No. The Mountain is open year-round, 365 days a year. Our low season (November 1 – March 31) features discounted rates for groups and individuals. While we do occasionally get snow, winter is wonderful at The Mountain. Days are crisp and the views are amazing.
I am not with a group and I don't want to come to a program, but I'd like to visit. Can I?

Yes. You do not have to be with a group or a program to come to The Mountain. Call our office and ask about our non-program guest rates.
Is The Mountain a summer camp?

The Mountain runs summer camp for youth, but The Mountain is much more than a summer camp. We are open all year round, offering programs for all ages and are available for groups to hold their own meetings, conferences and events at our site.
Where is The Mountain?

We are located 4 miles outside of Highlands, North Carolina, a small resort town in Western North Carolina. Our site is at the top of Little Scaly Mountain at 4200' elevation. We are in the midst of the Nantahala National Forest. Click here for more detailed directions.
What is the weather usually like at The Mountain?

The weather varies greatly on our mountaintop. We enjoy cool summers — the temperature rarely gets above 75 degrees. We are naturally air conditioned with mountain breezes. The weather can change several times in a day so it is hard to predict! So if you don't like it, stick around a couple more hours and it will probably change. We enjoy mild winters and when we do get snow, the roads leading to The Mountain are well maintained and plowed.
What types of programs does The Mountain offer?

We offer programs for all ages. The Retreat Center offers a variety of programs geared for adults and families including week-long Elderhostel programs, family camp, spiritual, arts and outdoor adventure programs and programs over the holiday season. Our youth programs include nine sessions of summer camp and leadership training focusing on social justice issues. Click here for more information.
I am in a wheelchair. Will I be able to get around at The Mountain?

The Mountain is dedicated to accessibility. We have fully accessible accommodations with accessible bathrooms available and all our major meeting spaces have ramps leading to them. We also have a limited number of scooters available for guest use. When you register please indicate any mobility considerations you have on the space provided on the registration form.
Can I bring my pet to The Mountain?

Pets are not allowed on The Mountain summit. Assistance animals accompanying individuals with disabilities are allowed – please notify The Mountain when registering.
